The Captain then calls out Alvar, who was minding his own business behind the wagon that de Rada and Belmont had the argument in front of. Sounds like there is going to be trouble if Belmont comes across Garcia. Rodrigo Belmont, the Captain, gets into a quiet argument with Gonzalez de Rada about his brother Garcia. The story then shifts to Esteren where a young boy, Alvar, has been selected to be part of the Captain’s riders, off to Al-Rassan to collect taxes. Ammar says he will pass along Husari’s regrets, as it is understandable that he will be unable to attend. Husari is passing a kidney stone and Jehane forbids him from attending the party at the tower. Jehane doesn’t have much time to think about this, though, as she has a patient to attend to. His story is famous his reputation infamous. In the prologue, Ammar ibn Khairan is identified as the man (though a young man at that time) who killed the last khalif of Al-Rassan at the behest of the king. While on her way, Jehane and Velaz learn that the man escorting them to Husari ibn Musa (the silk merchant) is none other than Ammar ibn Khairan of Aljais. Jehane decides to close up for the day and tend to him. A man cuts in line, and Jehane puts him in his place until he gives his reason for interrupting: one of Jehane’s main clients, a silk merchant, is rather ill and in need of her services. Jehane decides to ignore this, and continues to treat her patients.

Today the new wing of the tower will be celebrated, and the mercenaries are there for this event. While she is working, Jehane notices many of the King’s mercenaries in the area. He was a slave, but now is free, and choses to stay a servant to Jehane’s family. He worked for her father before “the incident,” which we learn about in chapter 4. Her assistant, Velaz, mixes her prescriptions and handles the money. There is a lot of discussion of urine, because that is how she determines maladies and creates courses of treatment. When the story opens, Jehane is working at her both in the market. Jehane is of the Kindath faith, which makes her lower class than the ruling Asharites. In chapter 1 we are introduced to Jehane, a female doctor that lives in Fezana.
